The more things change

It has been said, "the more things change, the more they stay the same" That seems to ring true with the White County Fair. I have many fond memories of the fair. As a kid the fair was bitter sweet. It marked a week of fun on one hand, but the closing of summer on the other hand. Our fair always lands right at the beginning of the school year. Hence, to look forward to the fair, was to see summer disappear. We usually went a couple of times to the old fair grounds during the week as a kid, but the most fun night was always when Jon and Steven would come up on friday. On that night cam, myself, jon and steven would head out on the midway for lots of laughs, rides and would always end it the same way... watching jon eat a caramel apple. Many stories have been born on that night.

Last night like many fairs before i found myself with cam and steve walking around the midway. We don't ride anymore, but during the moments when we get all the kids on the rides and we have a few minutes to ourselves we think back on the days of old. Last night was a fun time of remember that one time when...... or remember that year when .... The fair in and of itself is nothing more really than an over priced money pit. But as with most things in life it's not so much the activity your are participating in, as much as who you are participating with. When we visit the fair by ourselves it has some appeal, but when the night comes when "the crew" is all there it is more than the fair at that moment. I hope as our two girls grow up that they are building the same types of memories with all the hutchings crew as well. So tonight as the gates close on the fair, another page will turn in the history books.

And somewhere on Gum Spring Mountain, a tear silently rolls down a cheek...
